The Virtual Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Research Institute (VBCRI–Sudan) is a strategic virtual research and capacity-building unit established under the National University Biomedical Research Institute (NUBRI), Sudan. VBCRI–Sudan was created to provide a resilient, sustainable framework for bioinformatics, genomics, and computational biology research, particularly in environments where physical infrastructure and high-performance computing resources are limited.

VBCRI–Sudan is powered by Galaxy NUBRI, Sudan's national cloud-based bioinformatics platform, and operates with technical and hosting support from Galaxy Europe (usegalaxy.eu). Through this collaboration, the institute leverages secure cloud infrastructure, reproducible workflows, and internationally recognized training resources to support advanced data analysis, research continuity, and institutional development.

The institute focuses on applied research, genomic surveillance, and training in areas of national and regional importance, including infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), pathogen genomics, and selected applications in cancer bioinformatics.

VBCRI–Sudan serves as a collaborative hub connecting researchers, postgraduate students, national laboratories, and international partners.

Vision

To become a leading virtual research institute that enables sustainable, high-quality bioinformatics and genomics research, strengthens scientific resilience, and translates computational biology into meaningful public-health and biomedical impact in Sudan and the region.

Mission

To advance bioinformatics and computational biology in Sudan by providing accessible cloud-based research infrastructure, building national capacity through training and mentorship, supporting genomic surveillance and data-driven research, and fostering international collaboration and reproducible science.

Objectives

  • Provide resilient research infrastructure for genomics and bioinformatics through Galaxy NUBRI, independent of local high-cost computing resources.
  • Support genomic surveillance of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in collaboration with national laboratories and public health institutions.
  • Build sustainable human capacity through train-the-trainer programs, postgraduate training, and continuous professional development.
  • Enable high-quality, reproducible research using standardized workflows and best practices in computational biology.
  • Strengthen national and international collaborations to enhance research quality, visibility, and funding competitiveness.
  • Bridge research and public health needs by supporting data analysis for diagnostics, surveillance, and policy-relevant decision making.
  • Promote innovation and knowledge transfer in bioinformatics, computational genomics, and structural biology.
